There is a long and rich series of Japanese election studies. Many of these surveys replicate the same questions over time, as well as focusing on the specifics of each election. However, these surveys are not available through a single archive. The following list provides the listing of the major Japanese election studies and where they might be acquired. 

2003 Japanese Election Study (JES III)

The 2003 Japanese Election Study was conducted by Ken'ichi Ikeda, Yoshiaki Kobayashi, and Hiroshi Hirano. The survey was done before and after the House of Councilors election in July 2001, and before and after the House of Representatives Election in June 2003, and before and after the House of Councilors Election in July 2004.

These data are not yet publicly available.

The 2000 Japanese Election and Democracy Study (JEDS 2000)

This survey was conducted by the Committee for Japanese Election and Democracy Study (Ichiro Miyake, Aiji Tanaka, Ken'ichi Ikeda, Yoshitaka Nishizawa, Hiroshi Hirano). The JEDS 2000 study was conducted with the probability sample of 1,618 eligible voters in Japan. The main purpose of this survey is to understand the politically relevant aspect of social interaction among ordinary Japanese people by examining the diffusion of particular opinions between intimates such as spouse, close friends, and coworkers. The survey was conducted before and after the House of Representatives Election in June.

The World Values Survey -- Japan (ICPSR 2790 and 3975)

The World Values Survey includes Japan in four waves: 1981, 1990, 1996 and 1999. This survey examines social and political values, trust in government, and other political attitudes.

The 1998 Japanese Election and Democracy Study (JEDS 1998)

This survey was conducted by Ken'ichi Ikeda, Yoshitaka Nishizawa and Aiji Tanaka. It was a mail-survey that continued the JEDS96 survey to cover the 1998 House of Councilors election.

The 1996 Japanese Election and Democracy Study (JEDS 1996)

This survey was conducted by Aiji Tanaka, Ken'ichi Ikeda, and Yoshitaka Nishizawa in collaboration with Bradley Richardson, Susan Pharr, and Dennis Patterson as the American research team. This is a public opinion poll on the 1996 General Election for the House of Representatives, which was conducted before and after the election. As a US-Japan joint project, the poll deals with the first general election after the House electoral system was reformed. The survey also contains Module I of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES).

Survey of Social Networks and Voting Behavior 1993

This survey was done by Hiroshi Akuto and the Cross-National Election Project (CNEP) team in Japan. The survey emphasizes sociological intervening variables as influencing choice. The project is large on scale and encompasses more than a decade in duration. Its essential features lie in (1) the measurement and comparison of voting behavior in Japan, the United States, Britain, and Germany by using a common questionnaire as well as a common theoretical framework; (2) the adoption of the "intermediary" theory as the common theoretical framework; and (3) the through discussion among the project members from the four countries in an effort to bring about the closest comparison possible.

The 1993-96 Japanese Election Survey (JES II)

The JES II was conducted by Ikuo Kabashima, Joji Watanuki, Ichiro Miyake, Yoshiaki Kobayashi, and Ken'ichi Ikeda. This was a seven wave panel study, begun before the House of Representatives election in 1993, after the House of Councilors Election in July 1995, and before/after the House of Representatives election in 1996.

The 1983 Japanese Election Survey (JES I)

The JES I was conducted by conducted by Joji Watanuki, Ichiro Miyake, Takashi Inoguchi, and Ikuo Kabashima. The survey was designed as a panel survey of three waves to be conducted after the House of Councilors Election in July, and both before and after the House of Representatives Election. These data are available from the Leviathan databank, which charges a fee for the data.

The 1976 JABISS

The 1976 JABSISS survey was conducted by Scott Flanagan, Shinsuku Kohei, Ichiro Miyake, Bradley Richardson, and Joji Watanuki. The JABISS data was collected before and after the 1976 General Election. These data are available from the Leviathan databank, which charges a fee for the data.

The Crossnational Program in Social and Political Change -- Japan Survey (ICPSR 7768)

The survey was conducted by Sidney Verba, Norman Nie and Jae-On Kim. This survey is the Japanese component of a seven nation study of political participation.

Data are available from the ICPSR at the University of Michigan.

The 1967 Japanese Election Survey (ICPSR 7294)

The survey was conducted by Robert Ward and Ward and Akira Kubota. This collection is a study of Japanese voting behavior and attitudes prior to and after the 1967 Japanese General Election for members of the lower house of the Japanese National Diet. Topics explored include voting behavior, party identification, political socialization, attitudes toward other nations, opinions of and participation in recent political protests, and views on various social and cultural issues current in Japan at that time.
